Free-roaming, wild Mustangs are in trouble. They
are being removed from their native range lands in
         unprecedented numbers. Right now, thousands
languish in holding pens until the Bureau of Land
Management  and Interior Secretary Salazar decide
what's to be done with them.  See The American
Wild Horse Preservation Campaign for up-to-date
         information.

In the meantime, there are a number of non-profits,
including Madeleine Pickens' Wild Horse Sanctuary,
Lifesavers and Return to Freedom working to restore
wild horses and burros to their once-protected natural
habitats (see Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act
of 1971,) prevent future round-ups and secure that habitat
for posterity.  Many other non-profits and individuals are
also working hard to provide sustainable, humane solutions
to the disturbing and problematic actions of the BLM.

Also, it bears close notice that increasing numbers of our
domesticated companion equines are also in trouble these
days: abandonment, starvation and shipment to the slaughter-
houses of Mexico and Canada are commonplace. There are
many rescue and sanctuary organizations working on shoe-
strings to make a positive difference in the lives of these other-
wise throw-away companion animals.  See my Links page for
        just a few.
